A lot of your accomplishments might go unnoticed unless you write them down in the form of snippets, OKR items, performance reviews, and so forth. Self-documentation is a huge part of getting recognized, and it can be a giant energy vampire, because there's just so much of it that seems necessary.
About a year back, I prepared an important tech talk that required lots of preparation, sacrifice and planning. I did quite a bit this year and forgot to include this for my performance review. It is most likely the case that I'm the only one that roots for me, this will likely be forgotten during promotion and performance time as it's not in my written self-assessment.
This of course is infectious and breeds this type of 'every-person-for-himself' type of attitude. Google is not the only place that this happens of course, but it's unfortunate that it can happen here. Perhaps it is better than the alternative, which I haven't thought through.
