I have a great idea for a start up. As it is not a product, but service-based, how can I protect it if I plan on using Kickstarter.com for funding?
I wouldn't want to divulge the details of the idea over the internet knowing someone else can just snatch it up. At the same time kick starter doesn't have a NDA before viewing an idea or product. Are there other sources of similar funding?

Great ideas are more common than you may think... the name of the game is execution. If you want to capitalize on your idea, my advice is to take a risk and share it so you can attract as much help as possible. Your chance of failure is much higher if you keep your idea a secret.
As a co-founder of a company that tried to apply crowd sourcing to venture creation, I saw an unbelievable number of great ideas being submitted by people. We openly shared these ideas so our community could vote up the best ideas. The surprising thing was that very few ever became real products.
Great ideas are everywhere and can be stolen, what's scarce, and can't be stolen is the leadership and talent required to turn those ideas into reality.

Go for the brand play. Location, location, location. Get the best URL possible. lock it down in .com mode. Other extensions to lock down: .co, .net, .org... etc. If you own the best access point in to your paradigm, you effectively have an entitlement. Also go for the wordmark registration with USPTO.gov.
