Well I would just hand them a copy of the book
Apache Maven 2 Effective Implementation

Personally I quite liked it as it shows in practical examples how to use not only Maven, but how to setup a complete Continuous Integration environment for a simple project with Archiva and Continuum (even though I skipped the Continuum chapters as I prefer Jenkins). It doesn't go into great details, so it can't serve as a reference, but should bring developers new to Maven up to speed fairly quickly.
