So there are a few ways to go here, for lighter, more delicate cakes, I would suggest Moscato d'Asti which has some great flavors of peach and honeysuckle and is slightly sparkling so it's a great palate cleanser.
For berry flavored cakes, Brachetto d'Acqui has wonderful notes of strawberry and raspberry and is also sparkling.
For any kind of spiced cake, pumpkin cake carrot cake, I'm a fan of Vin Santo which tastes like caramel and oranges. A little savory which goes well with savory, baking spiced cakes.
And for chocolate cakes, I like Recioto della Valpolicella, Tannat, Ruby Port or Pedro Ximenez.
Most of these you can find in your local wine store and are reasonably priced.
