Jobs at Quora

Quora connects you to everything you want to know about. Quora aims to be the easiest place to write new content and share content from the web. We organize people and their interests so you can find, collect and share the information most valuable to you.

We're looking for people to help us achieve our vision. We are committed to building a cutting-edge technology company where people love to work and can be as productive as possible. We also have a culture of optimizing for learning and growth as we strive to continually improve as individuals and as a team. We are 40 people from diverse backgrounds, and still growing.

Quora is based in downtown Palo Alto, CA and is funded by Benchmark Capital. If you're interested, apply to be an engineer, a product designer, a product engineer, a product manager, or a receptionist.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, and employees have meaningful equity in the company. Quora pays 100% of employee benefit insurance premiums and 50% of any dependent premiums. Each employee has 15 days of paid time off and 11 paid holidays observed by the company. It is also important that everyone stays fresh and healthy, so if people are sick, we encourage them to take sick days as needed.

Other benefits that we provide include:

  • Health, dental, vision, life and accident insurance
  • Flexible spending accounts and 401(k) plan
  • Free lunches, dinners, snacks and drinks
  • Customized ergonomic setups and 30-inch monitors
  • Weekly team yoga lessons
  • Maternity leave
  • Regular one-on-one meetings and mentorship to help you learn

Engineering

We value building a culture with strong engineering values and goals because we believe that it is the key to building a great company and product. Building the right abstractions to manage complexity so that we can develop and iterate quickly as the product grows is important to us. We use continuous deployment and EC2 so all code that gets checked in goes live to production within minutes, no matter what time it is. We emphasize code reviews with 24-hour turnaround times and hold weekly engineering tech talks to maintain high code quality and to optimize for learning the best engineering practices.

Things we look for include:

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent, but the number of years of professional experience you have isn't important to us
  • Extraordinary software engineering talent
  • Knowledge of Python, JavaScript, and C++, or the ability to learn them quickly
  • Experience with web applications, databases, distributed systems, and machine learning a plus
  • Passion for learning and always improving yourself and the team around you
  • Love of the Quora product

We also have some challenges -- you can try them for fun, or if you want to make your application stand out.

Product Design

At Quora, we are as much a product company as we are a technology company and we expect continual product innovation from our product designers. As a product designer at Quora, you will have the authority and ability to make strong decisions about important parts of the product without much oversight. To help accomplish this goal, you will have the environment to execute on your vision, powerful tools to rapidly iterate through your ideas and an incredible team to help make you and your work better.

Requirements:

  • Strong portfolio including self-started projects
  • Extraordinary product, interaction, and visual design talent
  • Curiosity and passion for crafting amazing experiences
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain your design decisions
  • Substantial experience designing interactive online products
  • Ability to build what you design
  • The number of years of professional experience you have isn't important to us
  • You should be ready to make this startup the primary focus of your life

Exceptional candidates will have:

  • B.S. in Computer Science, HCI, MIS, or equivalent experience
  • Experience with product management
  • Experience with mobile design
  • Familiarity with Python

You should be comfortable with autonomy and ownership of large areas of the product but open to and interested in gathering feedback. An ideal candidate will have the potential to grow into a strong leadership role over time--in either a individual contributor or management capacity (i.e. eventually the equivalent of a Google Fellow or a V.P.)

We have built up technical infrastructure that makes it easy for us to quickly implement products and features that are composed from reusable building blocks, and that automatically update in real time as the underlying data in our system changes, without any extra work. These abstractions power the current Quora product, and this means that we can focus more on design and less on implementation in getting a product or feature built and released. As a result, product designers are highly empowered and are especially important to us.

Product Engineering

Product engineers help drive the Quora product forward by making strong contributions across multiple levels of our web stack, from implementing how users experience and interact with the product to the data models that support it. As a product engineer, you'll work closely with product designers, product managers, and other engineers to help define, create, and launch new features in the product. Using a powerful real-time framework that we've built, you'll find yourself building and iterating rapidly -- we also develop on EC2 and use continuous deployment, so all code that gets checked in goes live to production within minutes. We believe working well with and learning from each other are keys to writing high quality code and building a great product, so strong communication skills, collaboration, and adaptability are a must.

Things we look for include:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Deep understanding of web technologies including HTML, CSS and JavaScript (an impressive portfolio demonstrating these in action is a plus)
  • Extraordinary software engineering talent, including knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and an ability to write well-designed, efficient code
  • Knowledge of Python, Scala, or the ability to learn new languages quickly
  • Good product sense, enjoy conceiving of and building out product ideas
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Flexibility and ability to deal with change

Product Management

Product managers at Quora help our amazing team of engineers and product designers more efficiently and effectively ship innovative products. Great product managers for Quora excel at orchestrating and inspiring both the development team and the rest of company to achieve our vision. Working closely with the founders, engineering and design managers, product managers focus on both the big picture of Quora as a holistic system, as well as the details which come together to create a great product and results.

At the project level, PMs facilitate teams to identify clear goals and priorities, remove roadblocks and move quickly. PMs use inputs such as data, user feedback, site issues, market changes to help us continue to improve our product. Especially at a startup without full organizations in every function, our PMs deftly fill in the white space between everyone else to bring everything together better.

We are looking for a small number of exceptional candidates who have:

  • B.S. or M.S. with at least a minor in an engineering discipline
  • Passion for Quora and the intersection of social and information products
  • Natural ability to make things happen around you, managing ambiguity, complexity and inter-dependencies in an organized and structured way. Eagerness to be the glue between other existing functions, doing what it takes to make our product successful
  • Demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities or significant product/program/project manager roles at consumer Internet companies (number of years of professional experience doesn't matter to us)
  • Exceptional consensus and team building skills, who other great people almost always want to work with again
  • Excellent product sense and strategic understanding of the dynamics of social products, users and markets
  • Great judgment and poise under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills and intuition for communication strategy at every level -- within teams, within the company, to users, to press and other audiences
  • Analytical thinking skills, with a willingness to dig into data and navigate around a code base
