The question is totally wrong. They can never be african american, if they are not from Africa. Sri Lanka is a hot pot of mixed genetics for thousands of years people from Africa, India, Arabia, Europe, look at all images here, East asia has ended up on the island and stayed and spreed there gentics. But i agree that you have a small portion of African DNA in both Sri Lanka and South India. Even Sri Lankans with african futures. yes it exists not in big numbers but in coastal areas, alot of Soldiers from Mosambique (another portugese colony) and Kenya by the british . You also have sea people who eneded up in Maldives and Sri Lanka, there faces looks like Eritreans or Somalians came to Sri Lanka. Yemeni travelers also has african futures also came to Maldives, and Sri Lanka and stayed. Lastly you have the natives aborignal african group in Sri Lanka very low numbers but still looks like Brazilians or mixed Africans. You can see them in Kataragama. USA is to much focus on skin color. Race is more about scull and face structure. Sri Lankans i would say looks more european in the face structure than even indians, many Finish, hungary people, Russians who have more east asian genetics but are “white in skin”. Even do many Sri Lankans are darker skin they have more a european face . The Nazi regime racial maped Sri Lanka allways mentioned as Indo-Aryan. Many Sri lankans defentily has more an aryan look exept the skin color than other peoples with lighter skin like arabs or north indians , Many north europeans like Finland, Hungary, Russia has alot of East asian DNA in there face. As you can see the genetics here is a very mix of both east and west and south .

Cricketer Jayasuriya sinhalese with African ancestry

(Mozambique ancestors during portugese or birtish colony era) , bigger lips, wider nose bridge and stronger body, naturaly more curly hair.

Sri Lanka Vedda people ( Aborignal first people in Sri Lanka)

Can just speculate, cos people and ancestors have changed names to fit in the racial catogry on the island. But as you can see on his face he is really african looking futures. My guess (no evidence) is that he have ancestors from Kenya or West Africa.

Vedda people are today mixed in with local population but still many african futures can be seen. They have seperate uniq language

Sinhalese with European ancestery.

The 4th edition of Meyers Konversationslexikon (Leipzig, 1885-1890) shows the Caucasian race

Sri Lankans is a nationality. A nationality doesn't have colour.

The people on the picture are of ethnic Tamils who live in Northern and Central parts of Sri Lanka. Even the tamils are generally darker than Sinhalese, you would find that it differentiates from the social class, so don't be surprised if you find Tamils who might be even paler than a British.

It would be slightly safely to assume that the major races are of below colour ranges based on observation. Please note that there are exceptions.

Sinhalese - Pale, Brown
Sri Lankan Tamil - Pale, Dark Brown
Sri Lankan Muslims - Pale, Light Brown
Dutch-Burgher - Pale, White

One of the really great things about Sri Lanka is that you never get mistreated because of your skin colour. Sri Lankans are always welcoming whether you're black or white or of any colour in the visible colour spectrum.

Ok i’m not trying to be racist here, but should say the truth because people abusing srilankans without a reason.

The people in this pic dosen’t represent most srilankans. These people are tamils (தமிழர்) which are mainly related to south india. They do looks like south indians (facial features, skin color ). This dosen’t represent average srilankan . The sinhalese are different and lighter skinned than those people,

Indian tamils

Malayalis

Telugu people

Kannadiga people

Those people are same as most dravidan speakers of south india very dark complexion , facial features… And also don't get distracted by their celebrities that dosen’t represent common folks.

Sinhalese

Do we look african americans? Or different ? Most Lankans/sinhalese are lighter most south indians(as an average ).

This question is quite similar on asking “Are Egyptians Black or White with a African or European ancestry”?

What you need to know is all continents and islands in the planet were once connected with the great continent “Pangaea”

When the continents start the movement since millions of years and get scattered across the globe every life and non life forms are affected with the existing climate conditions in the particular area resulting in various skin color formations etc.

Accordingly, Science has categorized certain groups as Africoid, Melanasians, Oceanic Negroids, Negritos, Australoids etc.

With all above images and facts it is clear that the scientific terms on categorization is based on physical appearances in the current nation these individuals live; apart from the fact of the nation or land of origin which is another fact of concern in historical studies on ancient origins which is off the topic and the question.

Initially for the historical ancient origins of the Sinhalese whom are ancient islanders known as the “Siv Hela” do refer the link below;

or my answer given for “Who are the Sinhalese” Who are the Sinhalese?

In conclusion as seen above in the GONDWANALAND and the present day location one cannot simply judge or categorize a certain race based on the skin color or the location (located near this or that country likewise) since nature has already implemented the variety and uniqueness for each and every individual.

My personal opinion about the person who asked this question is that he/she simply points on to an individual with an angle related to skin color or a certain nations reference to a particular community such as “African American” etc. and seek facts with a lack of understanding the nature’s segregation of millions or billions of years.

ALLOW THE PURITY OF EVIL TO GUIDE YOU!

First of all, I have to say that I'm a fan of booker-t and a huge fan of Michael Jackson thus I like African Americans. But however people from South Asia are usually a mixture of Black or Dark Indigenous Asians known as ASI and west Eurasians or in your words caucasoids. So We are Definitely Related to those So-called Negrito Peoples of South East Asia - Particularly Andamanese Islanders, but not very closely related to the people of African Continent. (Genetically)

I think it's an outdated classification system but under the Caucasian/ negroid/ mongoloid taxonomy, people from South Asian countries were considered Caucasian.

No. Having dark skin doesn't make you black. Being dark-skinned and from Africa in the most recent generations makes you black. Sri Lankans are South Asian, like Indians are. Sri Lanka is southwest of India.

Sri Lanka has been an important point in trade routs since ancient times and faced colonial invasions and with it faced numerous migrations from different parts of the world. People came to Sri Lanka from whole of South Asia and during colonial period Europeans, Africans, Arabs, Chinese settles in SL. It is a very rich cultural mix. So Sri lankans are technically a color palette. We don’t have a single color but majority would be brown to black.
