TL; DR: Stripe has product managers now.
Product Management at Stripe
One of Stripe’s core values is that everyone is empowered to do whatever is necessary for Stripe, regardless of role. From sales to support, design to data analytics, many people are dedicated to building the best experiences for our customers. In particular, engineers play a critical role in defining, shaping, and executing on product vision. Historically, this empowerment was key to building an organization without product managers.
Since Patrick Collison’s Quora post in December 2012, Stripe has grown a lot — in number of employees, and in the size, complexity, and cross-functional nature of the projects we tackle to achieve ever more ambitious goals. Engineers and designers (along with many more from business and user-facing teams) remain deeply involved in making our products great.
Product managers help fulfill our goals by representing the customer, working with engineering and others to define and produce great products, and facilitating cross-company communication. In short, product managers help build better products, and also help teams build in a better way. Also, we bring donuts.
The Team
Product managers were first introduced to Stripe in June 2015, when the company was about 250 people. Currently, the product management team has 6 members.
We are growing the team thoughtfully and not too fast. Given that Stripe operated (and thrived) for 5 years without any product managers, we want to make sure that any additions are well-integrated into Stripe’s culture and processes. As Patrick predicted in 2012, we probably “won’t end up with [an org] that looks exactly like most other technology companies.” This is still very likely to be the case, not only for the product management org but for many teams at Stripe.
The role is still by no means fully defined today. Anyone joining the nascent team now has a huge opportunity to help shape what this role means at Stripe. We are hiring :)
