Method1:
Preferable one if you have already installed Ubuntu in legacy mode then install the Kali Linux in the same mode.

Step1: Make a bootable live USB with kalilinux and follow the boot setup instructions to set boot priority #1 as live USB https://craftedflash.com/info/ho...

Or if you know how to setup boot priority no need of above reference.

Step2: Here you can choose either try Kali live or graphical install.

Step3: If you choose try Kali live and like to proceed for the installation press window+s on keyboard and in the search column type install select install option and follow the instructions properly.

Step4: While partition the disk make sure that you have to make three partitions one for swap area, one for root and the other one for home.

Swap area:4gb space is enough

/(i.e root):Minimum 6gb and

/home.

Step5: After the partition continue to the installation and grub is installed automatically check whether Ubuntu is is detected by the Kali Linux grub. If in case not detected do boot repair with live USB in Kali Linux to load grub menu

Method2:
If Ubuntu is in uefi mode then install Kali Linux in legacy mode and follow the same procedure for the installation.

You haven't defined your hardware configuration. So, I'm going to assume that you have, or can have, two HDDs, or you can do a quick swap of HDDs (see picture):

1) Have only one HDD installed. Load your flavor of Linux.

2) Swap Drives. REMOVE YOUR PRE-LOADED HDD

3) Load your next flavor of Linux (have this one be the one to boot first).

4) Re-install the other HDD.

5) Enjoy! To select which Linux Distro, just select the boot drive when you power on.

PS. This can also be done if you have an easily swappable HDD on a laptop. (I have HDDs loaded with: Win10; Ubuntu; Debian; & Red Hat Fedora.) Here's an example:

The SSD has Win10 & The HDD has Red Hat Fedora in this picture. The laptop is a Dell Precision M6300 with a quick swap disk caddy system.

Partition the C: or D: on your windows machine to create some space. Install Ubuntu on that partition which will automatically detect Windows partition and chainload it. Under Ubuntu, run virtualbox or vmplayer and install Kali Linux on it as a VM.

Hey, why don't you directly install Kali instead of Ubuntu on your windows 8 machine.

However i suggest to play around through the live version thru USB / CD on your windows machine, once you feel comfortable then go for either VM-Player or the clean installation. Probably you'd know by the time what to do | how to do !!!
