How many is "several"?

Answers that can be understood by a bright five year old please.

On a more serious note, I tend to associate several with 3-4. Or a couple (2) < a few (2-3) < several (3-4) < a handful (4-5, but mostly 5).

I have always determined "several" to be between three and seven (inclusive).

This is consistent with the OED definition which is "more than two but not many".
