Hyperledger is a game-changing idea. The current implementation could be lacking, but we are evaluating the idea itself.

Key observation:

Hyperledger abstracts away all powerful properties of Bitcoin:

Bitcoin is an open public decentralized cryptographic ledger tracking a new currency. Hyperledger is purely the ledger, and can be used represent anything - shares, phone  units, currency etc.

Whenever you encounter a cool idea with Bitcoin; for example IBM's plan to combine it with Internet of Things; visualize that Hyperledger will eventually enable that cool idea for fiat money, shares etc.

By un-bundling currency from ledger, it opens the door to all assets and political ideologies. It does not matter if the user is communist, socialist or libertarian, Hyperledger is pure technology.

Secondary advantage

Hyperledger is designed to be fast and scalable

Why does it matter?

Look at Overstock's plan to make a decentralized stock market called Medici. Building on top of Counterparty, each trade will have a latency of minimum 10 minutes. This is directly as a result of Bitcoin block time. It is good enough for some use cases, but there are drawbacks. Trades with high latency make market making and price discovery inefficient.

Enter Hyperledger. Can one build a decentralized exchange protocol with it? Theoretically yes. I have no idea what the plan is here, but a fast decentralized stock exchange (~4 seconds per trade) will find a market.

There are multiple similar applications that are hard with Bitcoin due to speed. These are an open niche for Hyperledger to occupy.

Finally, an article attempting to imagine an "Internet of Money" built on Hyperledger: https://docs.google.com/document...

Hyperledger is the best solution used for business purpose. Many companies accepted Hyperledger such as Accenture, Cisco, Intel, SAP, Airbus. Hyperledger is area of interest across multiple business industries. To meet modern business demands IBM joined Hyperledger. When the bitcoin cryptocurrency introduced industries were interested in Blockchain, which is a platform for bitcoin. To develop open source, Business ready blockchain “Hyperledger Fabric” is used. Hyperledger maximizes the confidentiality and flexibility of blockchain.

Industry use cases of Hyperledger

  • Business Contracts: To maintain business to business privacy
  • Compliance ledger: Transparent access to permissioned member
  • Asset exchange: High financial transactions
  • Permissioned membership
  • Protects digital keys and sensitive data

To know more about the uses of Hyperledger take a look at this tutorial by edureka:

Hyperledger is exactly the kind of technology central banks should be looking at to replace their ancient payments networks.

I wrote a short piece on this here:
Re-imagining payment network architectures

To summarise, the benefits of distributed ledger technology go beyond the many features of systems like Bitcoin that make bankers nervous.

Decentralised networks are less fragile, easier and cheaper to setup and maintain and don't sit as a single point of failure for the whole payments system.

What I like about Hyperledger is that it is almost an out-of-the-box solution that I can deploy. Though it does not have the exchange function element I had talked about, it is nonetheless a great ledger system.

For private equity firms or private investment firms this is a great tool for presenting investors with investment units to buy.

Equities market is another possible area. For example Berkshire Hathaway stock is way too expensive for anyone to buy. However fractional ownership of the stock is very much possible. A mixed basket of different equities is a great way to use Hyperledger. Think of it as a small closed-ended Mutual Fund that you operate.

Meher Roy has also been working on Hyperledger, and one of the possible usage he is studying is the ability to use it for RTGS (Real-time Gross Settlement System).

For crowd-funded investments, this makes a perfect system, and even more so for a closed-loop coin (or stored value) system.

Meher. 4 seconds settlement would not allow HFT would it? Question is whether that is a good or bad idea (less liquidity put perhaps appeal to different investor base as it discourages HFT?)
