RuPaul, who became famous as a drag queen performing the song “Supermodel (You better work!)” and now RuPaul’s “Drag Race” has made quite a few comments toward the Trans community that seem anything other than supportive, and when he gets called out, he doubles down.
His ongoing lack of understanding or sensitivity toward this community, continue to show us that he’s willfully ignorant at best, although at this point, it really just is transphobia. He seems to be a self appointed gate keeper of the drag industry and is just nasty towards this community.
For years he has referred to trans contestants on his show as both “trannys” & “She-males” (both of these terms are HORRIBLE and have no place in our modern society’s language because of the hateful connotations they bring). This is something he absolutely refused to apologize for, until he was flooded with complaints and even then his “apology” was half assed saying he was “newly sensitized” toward the Trans community. That was in 2014.
He recently (2018) equated trans people on HRT to athletes using “performance enhancing drugs” and indicated that he didn’t feel trans people should be called drag performers.
It’s pretty pathetic, especially coming from a cis-male who made his career off of dressing like a woman. You’d think he would’ve had a lot more sensitivity than he does.
As a trans man of color, I find him to be a reprehensible disappointment. When he first hit the scene I was excited because of the visibility that I felt he was creating, but at this point, I will never again support anything he does…and I don’t care about his empty apologies at this point.
