Should I upgrade to Ubuntu 15.04 (non-LTS) from Ubuntu 14.04 (LTS) in my desktop ? What problems in general may I face if I switch to non-LTS?

I will not be upgrading my system to Ubuntu 15.04. Just read the release notes and found not much has changed. A few good changes here and there but nothing that is pushing me to upgrade. On top of that, the release is supported for another 9 months which is also a downside.

So I suggest you don't upgrade your system yet.
Do you want up-to-the-minute, latest and greatest experience in Ubuntu? Then you should upgrade to non-LTS whenever possible. You want stability and greater assurance of reliability and lower operational risk? Stay with LTS.

Just watch out for those sleep modes whatever you do.

As everyone has already answered, LTS's are generally done for systems where you need stability and reliability assurance for long term. Since its a desktop, I believe yes, go ahead with 15.04 update. Take utmost care that you don't go out of power/internet connection etc while upgrading. If you have crucial data in your desktop and you fear that you may get disconnected from the internet or may run out of power and if you don't want the hassle of rebuilding stuff again, DO NOT update.

LTS are generally used for servers.
