While mainland China is a geographical concept that refers to most of the lands in China, it doesn't include Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and China's islands in the South China sea and East China Sea

PRC is a political concept that refers to the areas where the PRC government has authority. The areas include mainland China, Taiwan (as PRC claims to own), Hong Kong, Macau, disputed islands in South China Sea and East China Sea.

Hong Kong is part of PRC but not part of mainland China.

Taiwan is a separate political entity that has equal status as PRC does. Taiwan lies outside mainland China and is in fact a big island that sits next to East China Sea. Taiwan has a different culture to mainland's due to political reasons.
