What operating system is used by Google employees?
Just curious, what operating system is used by Google employees on their computers? Is there a rule that Google employees can only use the operating system or a specific program or possibly limit the software that is used should not be derived from other vendors? Or maybe there is some sort of punishment for employees who use particular software from other vendors, such as Windows or Mac?
They predominantly use Mac, Linux, and even Chrome OS especially for sales and admin staff. They used to use Windows before too but they made that change a couple of years back. Development staff may and still do use Windows but everyone else has to have a very good reason to request to use a Windows machine.
Most engineers at Google run Goobuntu, a distribution of linux that is based off of the latest LTS release of Ubuntu. Google adds specific internal packages to Goobuntu, but for the most part it looks the same as Ubuntu.
While most desktop computers run Goobuntu, laptops are split between Macs running OS X and PCs (mostly ThinkPads) running Goobuntu.
