Why Does OkCupid have so many female bots?

It doesn’t as such… I am guessing the person asking this is a straight male so obviously, they will mostly see female bots because that’s who the bots will be targeting. Most of them have an advertising payload, in recent months it’s mostly been fake hookup sites that are taking people’s money for signing up.

On the flip side, there are a lot of “male” bots (the bots obviously don’t have a gender, just a target audience) - There is a seemingly never-ending bunch of gay “Russian boy” ones that target men over 48 ish for example.

They don’t last long - If you see them you are like as not to just see them for a few minutes. These days they mostly only expect to last for a few minutes, which is why their photos have websites addresses etc. Unfortunately for them, the very thing that makes them so easy to automatize is the same thing that makes them so easy to automatically zap once there is some feedback data on them.

As a side answer to the unasked “Why does OkCupid have so many bots” the answer is that we don’t block whole swathes of the world like most other dating sites do. Unless a geographical area or a VPN is being seen to cause trouble then it’s allowed to use the site (otherwise we would be doing a great disservice to people from countries like Saudi, Iraq and China). Blocking by geography is an easy fix for dating sites but OkCupid has always been an international site and it would be a shame to have to change that because of bot attacks.

I don’t know that it does have lots of bots (female or male). It does have lots of scammers, as do all the other dating sites. If you’re savvy, you’ll pick up on the scammers quickly. When you do, please block and report them. Only if you report them will they be removed. Of course, as soon as they’re banned, they pop up again under a different name! Just keep your wits about you.

Because OKcupid doesn’t ask to confirm your email address when you sign up.

You can literally made it up and you are still able to contact everyone on their website.

It doesn’t use your GPS location so you can write to every user regardless your position.

Luckily, it’s pretty easy to spot them, so you won’t waste much time.

I’ve run across a ridiculous number of scammers, but no bots. Bots would actually respond to messages.

Perhaps I have the super-secret “only see real people” function activated?
