The problem is that the most helpful products for language learners are free/freemium products that focus on sharing speaking activities with native speakers for feedback. These are great for learners because they are free and help with what they need most - feedback from a native speaker! For companies like Rosetta Stone/Babbel, these products don't generate much revenue and require a lot of work.
Even more unfortunate for these companies, is that they lose paying users to these free products. So, they buy them, shut them down and language learners are left with no other option than to return to using poor-quality courses that don't help out at all with speaking a foreign language.
As far as I know (and I followed these events closely), Rosetta Stone hasn't disclosed the exact reason behind abandoning SharedTalk.com. I doubt they ever will. It was simply closed down on August 31st, thus leaving a large community of users behind. In the email notification they sent, they redirect users to Livemocha, which has a much different set of features that I don't think will convince the SharedTalk audience.

Instead download Pimsleur or Michel Thomas audio lessons from the torrents to learn any language you want and you can also download Assimil. The only way to get anything free worthwhile in your life is just to straight up steal it. If we could steal music from master during the turn of the millennium then we can steal learning lagusages. steal everything you can find even ebooks and stuff and find a native language speaker of the target language your trying to learn and use that. Don't buy anything ever to learn a language….NEVER!
