I think it was Paul Newman who —responding to a question about what he’s worth as an actor— said, “In the right role, I’m priceless.” A lot of people ask, “What is the difference between a good and a priceless actor?” Right here tells you. I’m a Blanchett fanboy. I have been since “Elizabeth” and I have seen EVERY one of her movies. She’s nearly on the same level as Judy Dench and Meryl Streep. In the right role, that woman is priceless.

It is truly amazing how one person can step into a role and rewrite the narrative of an entire studio’s cinematic universe. Marvel has struggled —not horribly— but struggled with the roles it’s given to women and the villains it’s created. The roles for women have been ancillary at best (until just recently) and its villains have been Yawnsville (save for Loki).

Cate Blanchet’s skills immediately rewrite that narrative. Taika Waititi deserves credit and if TR turns out to be half as good as the trailer shows, then this may yet be proof that the MCU can grow and evolve over time. No matter what, Blanchett can own a role like it’s nobody else.

Aside from her ridiculous gravity defying headdresses and requisite revealing clothing, Hela is known for being the Norse Goddess of Death and ruler over Hel and Niffleheim (two of the nine realms of Asgard).

She has featured prominently in many of the story lines from the comics and is commonly associated with trying to start the end of your world (aka Ragnarok), often aided by her father, Loki.

Who you know is her father because he creepily hangs out by windows and ogles her while she lays around naked on lounge chairs.

Like any Asgardian, she has immense strength, speed and other meta-hum powers, as well an inventory of magical skills that would give Doctor Strange a run for his money. Basically, she’s a worthy foe for Thor and Co, and a great choice as the main villain of Thor 3.

Cate Blanchett, best known for play a human queen in 1998’s Elizabeth and an elf queen in The Lord of the Rings, is a perfect fit for this role. Mostly because she is one of the few actors has the chops to make those outfits not look absurd.

Excitingly there’s also a rumor her character is a set-up for bigger things to come during Avengers: Infinity War. Specifically the theory going around that Hela could be a stand in as the physical embodiment of Death.

Death, as some fans may know, is a character in the comics who Thanos wants to bone. His obsession with Death is the main catalyst for the cataclysmic events that take place during the comic version of Infinity War.

Based off the post-credit sequence from 2012’s The Avengers, Death could play some part in the universal warpath he embarks on in Infinity War. And perhaps, Hela, the “Goddess of Death”will fill that role.

Either way, there’s a lot riding on Cate Blanchett’s lofty shoulders. Least off all that stupid headdress.

I had to do a double take after reading an answer from Quora User. I knew she was in the movie, but I didn’t immediately recognize her.

Before I recognized her I had already made up my mind that this was by far the most formidable villain to show up in the Thor movies, and perhaps (barring cosmic beings with unfathomable power) the MCU.

But that’s not what you’re asking. You’re asking about her portrayal as Hela.

I don’t know Hela from the comics. Never got into Thor and don’t know how closely the representation appears.

But.

From a brief teaser, it’s clear that Blanchett will be bringing her A-game, as she always does. The moments shown in the teaser show a villain that already seems multidimensional. And thankfully not covered up with make-up (looking at you Eccleston in The Dark World). One thing I can’t stand is a good actor screwed over by so much make-up you can’t see them or by total miscasting (lo siento Oscar Isaac in X-Men: Apocalypse).

Bottom line: Cate looks like she’s well-cast and not buried in special FX or make-up. She’s going to kick serious serious ass.

I believe she is a once-in-a-generation actress. I've never seen her give a bad performance. She still appears regularly on stage, and is wildly popular among theatregoers. She has an extraordinarily mobile face, and a luminosity that can't be ignored.

I’m not aware of any surveys done about Cate Blanchett, but for my part she is well regarded.

She’s not only an Oscar winner but she has also contributed greatly to the Sydney Theatre Company.

She is also an outspoken activist on a number of issues, and has the brains and communication skills to get her message across.

Her sense of humour, in general, is very dry, VERY Australian and slightly off the wall, providing endless fun in interviews and other press situations. We love her for that.

i’m pretty sure you are referring to the ending during Yondu’s funeral. i see the similarity, but it’s not her.

the similarity is mainly in her hair. main reason this isn’t Hela, is because Hela was being held back in the prison Odin put her in. Thor Ragnarok takes place after Guardians of the Galaxy. this characters name is Aleta Ogord.

I thought it looked like it was Hela as well, but that wouldn’t make much sense.

This is like watching Katherine Hepburn against Liz Taylor when they were both in their prime.

Two superb Oscar-winner actors (Dench in 1999 for "Shakespeare in Love" and Blanchett in 2005 for "The Aviator") rush us through the rapids of a relationship that starts off as the normal and courteous daily lives of two high school teachers.

Yet the personality fault lines underlying the relationship quickly split and open a dangerous crack through which both women are pulled down to the depths of darkness by their own demons.

Barbara is a no nonsense disciplinarian who knows how to get rowdy students in order quick. She is a calm and balanced authority figure on the surface but deep down below she is a very lonely woman who takes refuge in her diary and aches for human touch and affection. She reminded me of the "Annie Wilkes" character (played by Kathy Bates) in "Misery (1990)" who can hurt the ones she loves "for their own good."

When the young and delicate new arts teacher Sheba shows up at the school, Barbara is propelled to Sheba's light and youthfulness like a moth to the candle flame.

Yet there is a problem.

Sheba is married to a seemingly wonderful if much older husband with two kids, one with Downs syndrome. Just when Barbara is contemplating to settle for a professional but cordial relationship, she is whipped into a frenzy of jealousy after discovering Sheba's dark side - a sexual affair with one of the students.

Playing both the "good cop" and "bad cop" at the same time, Barbara launches a campaign to win Sheba over as her confidante and mentor in return for possible greater intimacy with Sheba. Barbara will not go to the police or the school administration but at a price. When Sheba discovers the price and refuses to pay it, Barbara allows the whole scandal boil over as an act of revenge.

Facing her shame, returning home and reconciling with her husband is a life-time lesson and experience for Sheba. At the end of the movie, she seems to have almost completed her character arc and become a transformed person, at least for a while since we are not sure if she had gotten rid of her demons completely.

The same cannot be said for Barbara. The last scene shows her scheming for the affection of yet another unsuspecting young woman at the city park. The spider, totally irredeemable and unrepentant, is at her web again and we can feel another cycle of social disaster brewing hot already.

Terrific acting by both British screen divas. An unreserved 8 out of 10.

I'm sure you're talking about the female Ravager at Yondu's funeral. Their hairstyles are the same but two different actresses. One is Michelle Yeoh (Guardian's 2) the other is Kate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok). I strangely appreciate this question for reasons beyond comics or movies though!

Cate Blanchett is a chameleon. She can play so many different roles. The most memorable for me?

Bob Dylan! Yes, she played him in a movie called “I'm Not There”, and she was spectacular! She was nominated for an Oscar. This is an extremely unconventional and original film that has Bob Dylan portrayed at different periods of his life, with an array of actors playing different incarnations of him.

In addition to Cate Blanchett, he is portrayed by Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, and British actor Ben Wishaw. With the exception of Blanchett and Wishaw, none are actually made up to look like Bob Dylan, which makes it all the more interesting. He is even portrayed as a young African American boy .. it's wild!

Cate Blanchett stands out for nailing every nuance of Dylan at the time of his life that she is portraying. It is a very memorable performance.

Its not that Cate Blanchett is a very beautiful woman.

And its not that as Hela, she was a very supremely powerful woman, and used to getting what she wanted;

but that she was so confident in herself, that wherever she went… she strutted.

The rumor is that Cate Blanchett will be playing a villain in Thor: Ragnarok. I find this really exciting and love how she can bounce between amazing roles like Carol and  more commercial/popcorn roles like this.

The origin of the rumor is that Mark Ruffalo at the Golden Globes said that "can't wait to see [Cate Blanchett] to play a big bad" and since Mark Ruffalo's next role will be in Ragnarok, it is likely/possible, that she is wrapping up terms with Marvel for a multi-film role.

There two likely candidates for Cate Blanchett to play.

The first is The Enchantress who is a Loki collaborator who Tom Hiddleston has mentioned before as someone he'd like to see in the Thor franchise. This is a more standard character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- a Thor/Loki level character.

The second is Hela, who is the ruler of "Hel" the Asgardian afterworld. She is similar in strength as Thanos.  This would make sense if Marvel was going to use Hela as Cosmic Death, who Thanos is in love with in the Infinity War. This would be interesting because it would give someone for Thanos to interact with at his own level. It will be great for the character to be played an amazing actor like Cate Blanchett.  I'm really concerned about Infinity Wars holding together, so getting a head start on the drama might be a good thing.

I think she looks great. We all know Cate Blanchett can kill her roles, and I expect that she will do a great job here. I think, with her level of talent, she should be able to give us a villain that is actually interesting (and we finally get a female main villain). I am so glad they actually did her full headdress, because it looks killer.

Really have high hopes for Blanchett in this movie.

Cate Blanchett is the greatest contemporary actress we have, and she is highly underrated. She could be only compared to Katherine Hepburn or Meryl Streep, but people don’t do that because of her age. If you assess Cate Blanchett based on her Oscar winning performances of ‘The Aviator’ or ‘Blue Jasmine’, it would be highly unfair to her. In my opinion ‘Blue Jasmine’ is not the best of her, and she definitely know that, She acted in lot of troublesome characters before and it is piece of cake to her, if one knows her from her previous movies. Her Role in ‘The Aviator’ as Katherine Hepburn is quite restricted. Her Makeup, Hair-style, dressing, walking and Talking styles, all are confined, confined by Katherine Hepburn. She just have to do how Katherine has done before, she can’t use any of her acting skills, still she does it with great charm.

Her greatest movies would be ‘Notes on a scandal’, ‘Carol’ or Elizabeth (Both I and II). A fine actress could switch her emotions quite easily from sadness to anger or happiness, and the mood switches can be seen quite easily in Blanchett’s films. It is like treat to her admirers. In the ‘Notes on a scandal’, you can see that everywhere. Even the smallest roles in ‘Lord of Rings’ trilogy can’t escape her charms.

One also has to take into consideration that she came very late to Industry and she is still able to gain 7 Oscar nominations in her 20 years of career. She is still young and could be the one to win one more Oscar and equal that of Meryl Streep’s or Ingrid Bergman’s. I can see no such one in our contemporaries.
